Description

This is one of various drawings and sketches made at the Augustinian Priory at Restenneth, near Forfar. This unsigned sketch may be the work of Hutton himself. The detail on this sketch suggests that although the roof was completely gone from most of Restenneth Priory by 1814, the walls were still largely intact, and held large and elaborate sculpted stones. This ornamentation is particularly evident on the north wall, to the left of the picture. The remains of Restenneth Priory date mainly from the twelfth century, but may also include seventh- or eighth-century stones from a Pictish foundation on the same site.
