St John's Episcopal Church was established in Hampton in 1610 and relocated various times before 1728. The present building was constructed in 1728, but was damaged in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and then extensively in the Civil War when Confederate troops set fire to the church and many nearby buildings. Despite the considerable damage, the community restored the church and it is still in use today.
