Description

This is a sketch of the west façade of St Machar's Cathedral, Aberdeen, from a sketch by the Rev. J. Cordiner. It is not dated. The Hutton Collection also contains another sketch of the west façade of St Machar's Cathedral, by Mr G. Smith. These are two of a number of different perspectives of the interior and exterior of the cathedral collected by George Henry Hutton. Cordiner's sketch reveals more of the detail of the cathedral's west façade than Smith’s does, where cottages and trees in the foreground obscure much of the building. As was traditional in medieval church foundations, the main entrance to the cathedral is in the west wall, and above the doors, instead of one large window, the stonemason has constructed seven narrow, candle-shaped windows known as 'lights'.
