Description
Cullen Collegiate Church and Mercat Cross, Banffshire. This drawing dates from August 1st 1815, but is unsigned, and may be one of Hutton's own works. A note beneath the title reads, 'The Cross is a hexagon. On one of the sides is the Virgin & Babe, on another one the Royal Arms. The other sides are plain. The Cross has been removed since this sketch was made'. Cullen Mercat Cross now stands in the town's main square. The cross has changed location several times, and may date back almost as far as the burgh's original foundation in the twelfth century. Edward I of England may have burnt the first burgh of Cullen, of which no trace now remains, in about 1303. A small community then grew up around Cullen House, seat of the Earl of Findlater, but the modern town centre was developed in the eighteenth century with the growth of the textile industry, and the planned community of Seatown, on the coast, was added when the fishing industry began to boom in the nineteenth century.
