Engraver: Henry Melville (1792-1870)
Description
View looking up Tinakori Road (formerly Karori Road) towards Hawkestone Street and Tinakori hill, with goats grazing among tree stumps in the foreground, two men leaning on a tree stump, another on horseback with a dog, talking to a Maori man in the middle distance, a view of S C Brees' two-storied wooden home with fence and tall kahikitea tree, Alfred de Bathe Brandon's house at the top of the road and "Mr Joah Wakefield" (i.e. John Wakefield's?) house at the top of the hill to the left. Tinakori Hill is shown in the background, apparently with a large slip (although this is simply a lighter area of bush in the original watercolour, possibly the cutting to which Brees refers in his text)
