Description
One of a number of drawings and sketches from Elgin contained in the Hutton Collection, this view of the former Franciscan friary in Elgin, Morayshire from the south-west, Is dated August 1819, but the name of the artist is not supplied. A Franciscan or 'Grey' friary first appeared in Elgin in the thirteenth century, but despite receiving a grant from David II of Scotland in 1357, it appears to have gone into decline. A second community of Franciscans arrived in 1479 and they erected the friary church depicted in this drawing, which still stands in Elgin today. The church, restored in the nineteenth century, is one of Scotland's best-preserved friary churches.
