Description

Botanical study of Symphytum S. Pulmonaria non maculata, foliis glabris Americanum flore patulo caeruleo, native to South Africa. The study shows the stalk, flower, and leaves of the plant, with further details showing one complete flower and two stamens falling from the plant. Inscribed in ink beneath the image is the name of the specimen 'Symphytum S. Pulmonaria non maculata, foliis glabris Americanum flore patulo caeruleo. Pluk. Phyt. tab 227 f.6' in Ehret's handwriting, and the signature of the artist 'G.D. Ehret fecit'. Beneath the name of the specimen, in another hand, the image is annotated 'Flower'd in the Garden of Peter Collinson att Peckham in April 1735'. Georg Dionysius Ehret was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1757.
