Description

A note following the title of this watercolour reads, ' From a drawing made by Capt. Columbine in 1792'. Captain Columbine (c.1760-1811) was first a hydrographer, although as demonstrated here he was also an artist. This watercolour copies one of his drawings and shows Rothesay Castle within its natural surroundings. Rothesay Castle stands in the centre of the town of Rothesay, on the island of Bute. Whilst the present ruin dates from the early-thirteenth century, it is probable that a castle has stood on this site since the late-eleventh century. Famous for its water-filled moat and rather unusual circular wall, the castle is also well-known for its long association with the Stewart family.
