Description

This drawing is a south-west view of Fail Monastery, Ayrshire. It dates from 10th October 1800, but is unsigned. This is one of three drawings or sketches of Fail Monastery contained in the Hutton Collection. Fail, or Failford, is a hamlet about two miles south-east of Tarbolton, in Ayrshire, at the point where the Water of Fail meets the River Ayr. Trinitarian or Red Friars founded the monastery at Fail in about 1252. Like many Scottish monastic foundations, the Reformation of 1560 partially destroyed it, and the buildings passed into the ownership of the Wallace family.
