Description

Birket Foster whose watercolours often portray young children in landscape settings, sometimes with a hint of narrative. In Summertime a girl seeks companionship from her doll which she drags along the ground. Meanwhile one of her sisters is too absorbed in a book to notice her game, or entertain their younger sibling. Such works touched the sensibilities of Birket Foster's middle-class patrons who lived in the cities and, judging from the large sums of money generated at auction now, continue to appeal to art collectors today.
