Description
Two Caroline Island women on a beach. Both have tattoos on their limbs and are wearing a band of woven fabric around their hips. Both also have flowers in their ears. The left hand-woman, who is standing, holds a calabash formed from a large leaf.
Based on an ink drawing by Jules LeJeune, artist with Duperrey during his 1822-1824 visit to the Pacific. This watercolour version was prepared by Chazal and engraved as Plate 52 for L. I. Duperrey's Voyage ... sur la Coquille ... 1822-1825. Histoire du voyage. (Paris, 1826)
