Description
Iona Abbey, Argyllshire, by W. Daniell, Esq., A.R.A., July 1. 1815'. This item is one of nine, which together form a unique record of the many of Iona's monuments. The artist, William Daniell, is more famous for his images of Indian landscape, but his British work covered a longer time span and is of the same quality. The restoration of the abbey ruins began in 1901when funding for a new roof came from public appeal. This had taken two years to organise after the Duke of Argyll gave the site to the Iona Cathedral Trust. This was because of the adverse financial effects of the Boar Wars. It was not until 1938, however, and the establishment of Rev. George F. MacLeod's Iona Community, that further work was completed. Rev. McLeod instigated a cohesive, long-term building plan, eventually completed in 1965.
