Description
Watercolour sketch of Cowie Church, near Stonehaven, Kincardineshire. The writing below this watercolour sketchreads, 'Reduced, Cowey Church near Stoneharbour, Kincardineshire'. The painting is unsigned by the artist (possibly Hutton himself), but is dated June 15th, 1790. This is the only image relating to Cowie or Stonehaven in the Hutton Collection. The name 'Stoneharbour' in the picture's title was probably a mistake, as Stonehaven does not appear to ever been that. Cowie, a village roughly a kilometre north-east of Stonehaven town centre, was, until the sixteenth century, a more significant settlement than Stonehaven, and was chartered as a burgh of barony. Cowie Church may date from at least the thirteenth century, and its remains, and its graveyard, are still there today.
