Description

This is paler than many of Bonington’s Venetian images. The extreme whiteness of the building may have reflected enough light to drain the colour from it or perhaps he intended to contrast it with the warm colours of the Venetian Gothic architecture in his other paintings of the city. Unusually, here Bonington's eye has been caught by the late Baroque I Gesuati church. (Cambridge 2002)
