Description

The medieval ruin of Goodrich Castle sits hidden amongst trees, while horses drink from a lake in the foreground. Here, Cox’s painting technique is much tighter and more restrained in colour than his later works, such as Figures and Sheep on a Road near Ambleside, also in the Barber’s Collection. Cox lived in Hereford for several years, between 1814 and 1827. This painting of Goodrich Castle sits comfortably in the artist’s practice of depicting stately homes and castles in his landscapes.
