Description

This drawing of the priory at Pittenweem was made in 1783, and appeared in volume I of Captain Francis Grose's book, 'The Antiquities of Scotland', which was published in 1791. The artist, probably Hutton himself, was looking at the ruins of the priory from the north, with the River Forth - complete with ships -shown in the left side of the drawing. The Priory is located in the East Neuk of Fife, at the mouth of the River Forth. Pittenweem Priory has its origins in the ancient religious settlements that previously existed on the nearby Isle of May. In their desire to find a safer location for their community, the Augustinian monks from the island decided to construct a new building on the mainland, sometime during the twelfth century. The famous cave that lies among the cliffs below the priory is rumoured to have been the home of St Fillan, who was a disciple of St Columba. The Priory suffered extensive damage during the Reformation period.
