Description
"I wished very much to walk round the city outside the walls….and following a path passed into the open country. The wall was well built, with regular courses of squared stone and was strengthened here and there by towers. The coffin of a funeral procession, round like the trunk of a tree, was borne at a rapid pace on the shoulders of four men, followed by several others carrying parasols and conversing carelessly. The sketch was finished safely – for I thought it a bold thing to do in a place where one is hardly allowed to walk".
