Description

Due to its exposed location and style, the castle was never defendable. This meant that it rarely played a leading role in the politics of power in Scotland. It comprises a fourteenth-century keep, surrounded by a thirteenth-century curtain wall, with fifteenth- and sixteenth-century extensions. Hailes Castle was originally one of the manor houses of the Hepburn family, although after the family's fall at Flodden, it passed through the hands of the Stewarts, Setons and Dalrymples. It also regularly changed hands between English and Scottish administrators. Hailes was transferred to state ownership by the Earl of Balfour in 1924, and the building is now administered by Historic Scotland.
