Description
Effigy of King John, in Worcester Cathedral, study for plate 12 of Stothard's 'The Monumental Effigies of Great Britain', published by Mrs Anna Eliza Bray, 1817-32, one of a large group of studies for this volume; whole-length, recumbent figure, seen in profile, head on the right, left hand on sword, wearing a crown, dalmatic and tunic, flanked by a bishop (another on his right not visible - pair identified as Oswald and Wulstan), a lion underfoot, also separate study of the crown. 1813. Pen and grey, with grey wash, graphite and watercolour.
