Description

Painting of a Christmas Lecture given by Michael Faraday on the common metals in the Ri Lecture Theatre in December 1855. Showing him standing behind the Lecture Theatre table, one arm raised to gesture. The theatre is shown at capacity with people standing in the aisles. Prince Albert and his sons sit at the front of the audience on chairs, he and the Prince of Wales are paying attention while Prince Alfred is looking out at the viewer. The lecture depicted is the first one of the series, which was attended by all three princes, several other identifiable figures are shown in the audience, including Ri officers and members of Faraday's family and much of the apparatus shown is still in the museum collections. A similar image by Blaikley was created for the Illustrated London News. Probably a lithograph overpainted in gouache (and possibly watercolour).
