Description
This drawing, made in July 1784, shows part of the ruins of Lindores Abbey. The drawing's title, included at the bottom of the page, reads, 'Part of Lindores Abbey 1784'. The name of the artist has not been included, although it is quite likely to have been Hutton himself. David, Earl of Huntingdon established Lindores Abbey in 1191. It is located by the town of Newburgh, on the northern banks of the River Tay. A Tironesian Abbey inhabited by Benedictine monks, it was dedicated to St Mary, St Andrew and All Saints. As with so many church buildings, Lindores Abbey was destroyed by Reformers during the Scottish Reformation.
