Description
Shows dead trees in the landscape with a steep winding road, probably up the Rimutaka Range, a group of Maori leaning on a bridge at the lowest point of the road, and an armed rider starting up the road.
Identification: Titled on back in pencil as Waimakariri Gorge near the Cass River, Canterbury, NZ by N Chevalier 1867. The title is not in the artist's hand. Comparison with two charcoal drawings in the Library (A-196-006, The Hut[t] Valley) and in Auckland Art Gallery (The Hutt Valley, 1869) has shown that the watercolour is a view of the Rimutaka Hill Road. The incorrect title appears to be the work of an earlier owner
Dating: Chevalier crossed the Rimutaka Hill Road from Wellington to Masterton in late November 1868.
Purchased as a view of the Waimakariri Gorge near the Cass River, Canterbury, 1867, but later shown to be Rimutaka Range, Wellington, 1868.
Other Titles - Waimakariri Gorge near the Cass River, Canterbury, New Zealand by N Chevalier 1867 [incorrect title from back of work]
