Description

Watercolour illustration commissioned by William Roxburgh. ROX1709.
In his 'Flora Indica', Roxburgh describes this plant as a scandent shrub, native of Ceylon, where it flowers during the cool months of November and December, and it ripens the seed in May and June. Roxburgh also reports an account of the plant given by General Macdowall, in which the latter speculates that this specimen could be the 'Colombo root', recommended by the natives as a an excellent stomachic. However Roxburgh notes: 'This is certainly not the 'Colombo root' of our 'Materia Medica''.
