Description

Set against a stark background a young girl clutches a slate beneath her arm, her gaze lowered to a point outside of the picture frame. Although there are few narrative clues, the student's worn clothing suggests that she may attend one of the many charity schools which were set up by religious organizations throughout the 19th century with the intention of teaching poor children to read and write.This is the first work by Cope to enter the Whitworth?s collection. The heavy use of bodycolour to create detail (look at the veins in the girl's left hand), and the gilt frame reflects the artist's ambition to raise the status of watercolour painting and compete with his contemporaries working with oil.
