Description

Made in July 1790, this fine drawing, based on a sketch made by Thomas Cocking, shows the ruined walls of Lindores Abbey. A note in the bottom left corner of the page attributes the original source for the drawing. The name of the artist is not included. Situated on the southern banks of the River Tay, Lindores Abbey was founded by David, Earl of Huntingdon, brother of King William I, near the end of the twelfth century. Benedictine monks from the Order of Tiron were the first cleric to inhabit the abbey. Abbot Lawrence, a noted theologian and one of the founders of St Andrews University, was probably the most famous leader of the abbey. As with so many church buildings in Scotland, the abbey was destroyed by mobs during the Reformation period.
