Description

The artist's name is not included anywhere on the picture. This is a clearer illustration than most of the other half-dozen pictures of Restenneth in the Hutton Collection, and gives a better idea of the extent of the ruins. Trees and shrubs to the south partially obscure the building. In this sketch, Restenneth Priory looks much as it does today. The steeple is largely intact, but the roof is missing from the rest of the building, and some walls have crumbled away. Within the main body of the priory, some of the elaborate sculpture and ornamentation on the church walls has survived. The priory is of considerable antiquity. Most of it dates from a twelfth-century Augustinian building, but some parts of the walls are the remains of a Pictish foundation from four or five centuries earlier.
