Description

Cantagallina was one of several Tuscan artists working before 1650 known primarily for landscape drawings and prints. He was a contemporary of Guercino, and his style recalls that of Flemish artists and Jacques Callot, with whom he studied.
The prolific Cantagallina produced many highly finished topographical views of Florence and other sites in Tuscany, drawing with warm brown washes, and these scenes are among his finest. His drawings were almost certainly intended as independent works of art, and his draftsmanship was closely related to his work as a printmaker. Cantagallina’s vistas often have a detailed focus exemplified in this scene by defined and curled foliage.
