Description
A slaver sitting on a barrel with a cutlass near him, examining a group of slaves who stand bound in a line on the right, watched by a man who holds a quill and leans over bales behind the slaver's shoulder; a ship in the background flying the American striped flag; plate 1 from a set. 1798. Hand-coloured mezzotint with some etching.
Inscription
Lettered below the image with four lines of verse in two columns 'Fleecy locks and black complexion / Cannot forfeit Natures claim // [...] may differ, but affection / Dwells in Black & White the same.' and '423 // Published 20th SEptr 1798, by Laurie & Whittle, 53 Fleet Street London.'
