Description

This drawing shows St Mary's Collegiate Church and the sixteenth-century Nungate Bridge. It is possibly a copy of an engraving that also forms part of the Hutton Collection. St Mary's Collegiate Church and the Nungate Bridge are two of Haddington's most important landmarks, and both are instantly recognisable to those familiar with the town. The largest parish church in Scotland, St Mary's dates from the fourteenth century and is considered one of the three great pre-Reformation churches of the Lothians: the other two are St Giles in Edinburgh and St Michael's in Linlithgow. The existing Nungate Bridge was built in the sixteenth century, although a bridge has stood in this area since the 1200s.
