Description

There is one original watercolour within this frame: 'Tongariro volcano. Ko Mari. his wife.
Mungakahi. Chief of Tongariro. near Taupo Lake. The chief of Tongariro, and his wife Ko Mari'. The Rotoaira chief Mungakahi stands wearing a flax kakahu (cloak) made with yellow and black hieke (tags) over large blankets. Mungakahi has a moko (traditional Maori facial tattoo), a greenstone (nephrite jade) ear pendant and holds a taiaha (long club fighting staff) which has been decorated with kaka (parrot) feathers and dog hide. His wife Mari is seated wearing a greenstone hei tiki pendant and a kakahu (cloak) made with thrumbs that have been scraped and dyed.
