Description

This drawing is dated 1783 but is unsigned by the artist. This is one of several images in the Hutton Collection relating to Gowrie House, referred to by Hutton as Gowrie Castle. Gowrie House was a baronial mansion overlooking the River Tay, at the east end of present-day South Street in Perth. Before demolition in 1809, it had an eventful history. In 1600, attendants of King James VI killed its owner, the third Earl of Gowrie, there, along with his brother. In the eighteenth century, the Town presented the house to the Duke of Cumberland, who sold the House to the British government for use as a military barracks.
