Description

R. Taylor painted this watercolour of Fail Monastery, Ayrshire in 1800. This is one of three views of Fail Monastery in the Hutton Collection. Taylor's painting shows a ruined section of the Monastery of Fail in the foreground, and the background, the rolling wooded hills north of the valley of the River Ayr. The monastery was founded in 1252 by Trinitarian or Red Friars, on a site where the Water of Fail meets the Ayr, about two miles south-east of Tarbolton. The monastery was not one of the more prominent in Scotland, but a satirical rhyme implying that the monks are hypocrites has survived, and reads: 'The Friars of Fail made gude kail / On Fridays when they fasted; / And they never wanted gear enough / As long as their neighbour's lasted'.
