Description
The title of this drawing is 'Gowrie Castle, Perth, looking north'. It is dated 1783 but is unsigned by the artist. It is likely, however, that this was one of George Henry Hutton's own drawings. He appears to have made a series of studies of the Gowrie House in 1783, some of which are engravings that also appear in the Hutton Collection. Gowrie House, on the banks of the Tay in Perth, was the town residence of the Earls of Gowrie until James VI forfeited the family in the early seventeenth century. This occurred after a dispute, which had seen the third earl, and his brother killed in an alleged assassination attempt on the King. Thereafter the house was mooted as the site for a new university, belonged briefly to the Duke of Cumberland, and finally served as a military barracks before its demolition in 1809.
