Description

A carriage procession driving under a triumphal arch on Ludgate Hill towards St. Paul's Cathedral. Signed 'H W Brewer'. On 27 February 1872, a service of thanksgiving was held at St. Paul's Cathedral to celebrate the recovery from typhoid of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII). Queen Victoria, the Prince and Princess of Wales and a number of other members of the royal family attended the service, and the Queen later wrote a long account of the event in her journal, describing the decorations on the route and the enthusiastic reception that the royal family received from the people. The royal collection also holds an oil painting by Nicholas Chevalier depicting a very similar moment in the day which was commissioned by Queen Victoria.
