Inscribed below pasted down sheet: Friedrichroda from near the Selsen Oct: 1 - 1862. Queen Victoria travelled to Brussels on 1 September 1862, to arrange the betrothal of her eldest son, Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, to Princess Alexandra of Denmark. On the 4 September the Queen travelled to Reinhardsbrunn, where she stayed until 3 October 1862 in the house of her brother-in-law, Ernest II, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Queen Victoria made many visits to local beauty spots during her stay in Germany. On 1 October 1862, Queen Victoria drove to the Rheinhardsberg with her third daughter, Princess Helena. The Queen records the journey in her journal entry of that day, describing how on the way there she "Stopped to sketch Friedrichroda which lies so prettily at one's feet."
