Description

The drawing, which is dated 1796 and unsigned by the artist, is a south-west view of Peebles Cross Church, Peeblesshire and may be the work of Hutton himself. It is one of a number of views of the Cross Church in the Hutton Collection. The remains of the church and the surrounding countryside are in bold pencil strokes, but in addition, in the foreground, the artist has included a fainter outline drawing of a plough pulled by a team of oxen, which provides an indication that this was farming country without obscuring the view of the church. The Cross Church or Cross Kirk in Peebles, founded in 1261, got its name because it stood on the site of an ancient stone cross. The church commemorates St Nicholas.
