Description
Figures round the brass commemorating Sir Hugh Hastings (died 1347), in Elsing Church, Norfolk, study prepared for, but not used in Stothard's 'The Monumental Effigies of Great Britain', published by Mrs Anna Eliza Bray, 1817-32, one of a large group of studies for this volume; two male figures, both whole-length and wearing armour, and surcoat decorated with heraldic devices, at left a King of England, probably Edward III, turned to front, holding a sword with right hand, and also wearing a crown, at his left Thomas (Beauchamp), Earl of Warwick, seen walking to right. Pen and black ink and graphite and watercolour, squared for transfer.
