Description

Initialled: "MRK". The inscription contains a rhyme relating to the 17th-century owner and developer of Rycote Park, Sir Montague Bertie. It reads "Learn Bertie's all my Stem to cherish For when I fall Your Stem shall perish." Montague Bertie employed Capability Brown to redesign the Park and this may refer to his work demolishing old trees as part of this.
Inscribed, upper edge: "Ancient Prophecy about this Old Tree in Rycote Park 10 / Learn Berties all / My stem to cherish / For when I fall / Your stem shall perish".
Collective Title: From the first of three bound volumes containing sketches by Vice-Admiral Lord Mark Robert Kerr (1776-1840).
