Description

Flagship of the Ringgold expedition, organized to survey the waters of the Bering Strait, the North Pacific Ocean and the China Seas, which were used by American ships and trasing vessels in their routes between the United States and China. For this survey Congress, in August 1852, had appropriated $125,000. The five vellels fitted out were the U.S. sloop of war “Vincennes,” the steam propeller “John Hancock,” the U.S. brig “Porpoise,” the storeship John Kennedy” and the tender Fenimore Cooper.”.
