Description

This light-filled watercolor describes figures and boats in an estuary near a port at low tide. An exposed sandbank occupies the center foreground, with wooden pilings extending down to the water. Duncan was a marine painter, watercolorist and illustrator who also made etchings and lithographs, studied aquatint with Robert William Havell, and established his own engraving business. Medium: watercolor with gum arabic, over graphite, heightened with touches of gouache.
