Description

This drawing is 'by Capt. Grose from a sketch . . . to me 1789'. It shows the exterior of St Clement's Church at Rodel, Harris, also known as the Church of Rodel. The artist, Captain Grose, is most likely Francis Grose, the celebrated antiquarian and author of 'The Antiquities of Scotland', published in 1791. St Clement's Church was built in the late-fifteenth or early-sixteenth century for the MacLeods of Harris, by Alexander MacLeod of Dunvegan and Harris. It probably stands on the site of a much earlier church, and may be one of the most impressive buildings in whole of the Western Isles. Although it fell into disuse and disrepair following the Reformation, subsequent years have seen extensive programmes of repair and restoration.
