Description

This drawing, dated 1784, shows a panoramic view of the city of Edinburgh, as viewed from the south and looking in a north-easterly direction. In the middle of the drawing, it is possible to discern the vague outlines of Arthur's Seat and Salisbury Crags. The artist of this sketch is unknown. Arthur's Seat is an extinct volcano that is located in the middle of the city. There is some debate regarding who or what the volcano is named after, with some people believing is named after King Arthur of Round Table fame, while others maintain that it was named in honour of a local hero who had nothing to do with the King Arthur legend. Salisbury Crags are the spectacular remains of glaciated rock formations, and, like Arthur's Seat, are located in Holyrood Park.
