Description

Interior of St Duthac's Collegiate Church in Tain, Ross-shire. It is dated September 2nd 1819. The page is unsigned by the artist, and it is likely that George Henry Hutton himself made the drawing. Despite not being one of Scotland's most celebrated ecclesiastical buildings, St Duthac's Collegiate Church clearly held a lot of interest for Hutton, and there are at least ten items relating to it in his collection of drawings. This detailed drawing provides an excellent impression of the layout of St Duthac's Collegiate Church. The pulpit is on the right hand side, and much of the space for worshippers in the narrow church appears to be concentrated in split-level galleries. In this drawing the church seems to be intact and in good condition, but it is known that it fell into disrepair some time early in the nineteenth century, and had to be re-roofed and restored in 1877.
