Description

Minature watercolour on ivory, after Richard Cosway, mounted in a silver gilt frame with split-pearl border; Inscriptions: "Sir George Jackson, 1st Bart, Secretary to the Admiralty, Judge Advocate to the Fleet, born 1709, died 1798" [erroneous information on the date of birth and death] -- engraved on reverse. ; Sir George Jackson's naval career began in 1743 and by 1766 he was Secretary of the Admiralty and Judge Advocate of the British Naval Fleet. He was a Member of Parliament for Weymouth and Melcombe Regis (1762-1768) and for Colchester (1790-1796) and was knighted in 1791. Jackson was a contemporary, friend and patron of Captain James Cook. Cook named Port Jackson, New South Wales, and Cape Jackson, New Zealand, after his patron. Medium: watercolour.
