Description
This incomplete drawing, made in 1783, shows the Old Bridge over the River Tay at Perth, as viewed from the east bank and looking south. Although the name of the artist has not been included on the drawing, it is quite likely to have been George Hutton himself. The artist who drew this sketch would have been upriver, looking down towards the bridge, with the city of Perth located on the right side of the sketch. The Old Bridge, also known as Smeaton's Bridge, was built in 1771, and replaced the ferry. The original bridge was destroyed in a flood in 1621. Taking four years to construct, at a cost of £26,631 (about £2,129,000 in today's terms), the bridge was named after the engineer who built it, John Smeaton.
Additional Makers: engineer- John Smeaton (1724-1792)
