Description

Delacroix’s journey to North Africa in 1832 had a profound and lasting influence on his art, affecting the content and color of virtually all his subsequent work. This drawing was likely made during his travels between Tangier and Meknes, when he sketched extensively. The three men, probably Moroccan horsemen, accompanied the French diplomatic group at an encampment. Delacroix clearly reveled in the vivid colors of the red cloth draping the saddles and the contrasting blue-violet tones of the distant mountain range. Medium: watercolor over graphite.
