Description

Copy of drawing of the west face of Inchmahome Priory. This drawing is not titled. It is a copy of a drawing of the west face of Inchmahome Priory by William M. Stirling, and dates from 1827. William Macgregor Stirling was the minister in the hamlet of Port of Menteith, on the shores of the Lake of Menteith, in the 1820s. He was responsible for several drawings of Inchmahome Priory in the Hutton Collection. The ruins of Inchmahome Priory are stituated on an island in the Lake of Menteith in Perthshire, fifteen miles west of Stirling. The priory was founded in 1238 by Walter Comyn, Earl of Menteith, for a group of monks of the Augustinian Order. It declined after Reformation of 1560 but was a very significant religious foundation in its day, and was visited on several occasions by King Robert the Bruce, and also by Mary Queen of Scots.
