Description

A note under the title explains that 'These small remains are on the Dundee Road adjoining the South West angle of the church yard, and are supposed to have been the Porter's Lodge'. The name of the artist has not been included. King Malcolm IV founded Coupar Abbey in the mid-twelfth century. Established as a Cistercian House, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, Protestant reformers burnt the building in 1559. All that remains of the original abbey are a few carved and moulded stones and the gatehouse. As was often the case with such ruins, for years the abbey was a quarry for local buildings.
