Description

Shows a view of a large square stone house two-storeyed with square three-storeyed towers at the corners. It stands in a parklike setting with rolling grounds, trees, and a pond with deer grazing in the foreground.

The reference to the ship "True Briton" on the verso probably refers to a voyage Weld made back to New Zealand; it sailed from London 15 August 1852, and arrived in Port Nicholson 18 December 1852. Weld may have finished this view on board ship.

Ugbrooke was the Clifford family's ancestral home near Chudleigh, Devonshire. Weld, the artist of this view, was a cousin of the Cliffords and stayed at Ugbrooke for lengthy periods while growing up. The Vavasour family, also cousins and partners of Weld's and the Cliffords', named their property in Marlborough Ugbrooke.
