Description

Originally founded in the twelfth century, Llanthony Abbey is situated in Monmouthshire in South Wales and fell into ruin after the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 1530s. Rooker has deliberately chosen to leave out the western range of the cloister (it is behind the viewer and to the left), since by the late eighteenth century it had been converted into a house; the figures in the centre are playing the traditional game of fives, in which a ball is hit with the hand, against the eastern wall of the cloister (the ball can be seen in the air with one of the players about to hit it).
